NATURAL GAS PUBLIC COMPANY (CYGAS OR DEFA)

The Natural Gas Public Company of Cyprus (known by its Greek acronym DEFA) was established in 2007 to
facilitate the importation and distribution of natural gas to Cyprus energy market.

DEFA’s role and responsibilities include the:

  • Purchase and import of natural gas, including LNG
  • Development and management of an LNG Import Terminal and gas transmission network;
  • Sale, distribution and supply of natural gas within the Cypriot market.

DEFA will have the exclusive right to import and supply natural gas to consumers in Cyprus under the derogations that can be used for the Natural Gas Market of Cyprus stemming from the “Directive 2003/55/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 June 2003 concerning common rules for the internal market in natural gas”.

This project will be the first element of DEFA’s gas network infrastructure and will connect directly to the power generation facility of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) at Vasilikos.

Electricity authority of cyprus

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is a Government of Cyprus owned, vertically integrated electricity
company. It owns and operates three thermal power stations located at Vasilikos, Dekeleia and Moni with a total installed capacity of 1.480 MW, of which 830MW has the dual-fuel capability (liquid fuels & natural gas) all situated at Vasilikos.

EAC is also responsible for the distribution and supply of electricity to all classes of consumers in Cyprus, including electricity produced by several privately owned Renewable Energy facilities.

EAC will initially be the sole consumer of natural gas when this project is brought into operation. It is expected, however, that independent gas-fired power generation plants will be constructed in the next few years. This project is not conditional on the development of these power plants.
