Social & Environmental Policy of CMC Cyprus

The present Policy Statement represents the commitment of CMC to the principles of sustainable development, environmental protection and social responsibility. 

CMC’s objective is the safe and cost-effective construction of a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Vasilikos area. In pursuit of this objective, CMC follows an integrated approach to environmental risk management. Being aware of its responsibilities and duties towards its employees and stakeholders, CMC follows internationally recognized social and environmental standards and applies the best available practices. 

CMC
 is committed to operating responsibly and carefully, to prevent or minimise pollution incidents that may occur aiming to safeguard the natural and social environment. CMC is dedicated to the continuous improvement of its operational performance to minimise the environmental and social impacts resulting from its activities. 

An important objective of CMC’s Environmental and Social Policy (ESP) is the development and implementation of an Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) to ensure compliance with Cypriot and European legislation and international ES standards.

 To achieve this objective, CMC commits itself to the following:

  • Complying with Cypriot and European legislation and international standards.
  • Operating, and maintaining facilities in a safe, reliable, sustainable, environmentally and socially responsible, and efficient manner.
  • Organising all activities aiming at promoting rational energy and water consumption throughout the works in the framework of sustainable development.
  • Protecting the environment, including prevention of pollution, fulfilling the company’s compliance obligations and other specific commitments relevant to the context of the organisation.
  • Organising our design activities with a focus on environmental issues, especially the reduction of energy and resource consumption during operation.
  • Continually improving our environmental performance and monitoring our achievements through set objectives and targets created to ensure intended outcomes are met.
  • Keeping our waste streams to a minimum and maximising the efficient use of materials and resources by recycling materials where possible and managing and disposing of all waste with the duty of care, in with the principles of Circular Economy.
  • Maintaining awareness of and identifying potential environmental change and impact resulting from our activities and services.
  • Discussing Environment issues at the highest levels of our Company and consulting and communicating, where appropriate, with our employees on all such issues.
  • Monitoring and assessing our Environmental and Social Management System against agreed key performance indicators to ensure continuous improvement and prevent the recurrence of any inconsistencies.
  • Promoting the culture of environmental care throughout our operations, as well as those of our subcontractors.
  • Identifying and evaluating environmental and social risks aiming at predicting and avoiding potential impacts. Where avoidance is impossible, appropriate mitigation measures will be applied in conjunction with the necessary compensation actions.
  • Promoting the protection of the natural and manmade environment (fauna, avifauna and flora on land and sea as well as cultural heritage).
  • Communicating and promoting social responsibility among employees, customers, associates, suppliers, the public, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensuring all managers, supervisors and employees in the project are fully aware of their responsibilities to promote the most effective environmental and social performance of the company. All employees and associates will receive the necessary information and training.
  • Providing of appropriate complaint mechanism for employees and other stakeholders to express concerns and make suggestions about CMC’s activities and practices. The complaint mechanisms will be implemented in a transparent and accountable manner to address and respond effectively to concerns, feedback and comments.
  • Ensuring effective management of grievances expressed by employees and other stakeholders.
  • Engaging in ongoing and open dialogue with the local communities to be informed about the company’s objectives and actions.
  • Developing and implementing procedures to prevent environmental emergencies from arising, and to prepare for and respond to emergencies that cannot be predicted.
  • Ensuring that CMC’s procurement system considers the environmental and social criteria for the lifecycle of equipment and materials installation.
  • Actively supporting and participating in the development of new technologies and processes that could further improve environmental performance, taking into consideration health and safety.
  • Assuring that the legal and ethical principles of the company will be followed by the employees and all parties involved in its works.

For the above Environmental and Social Policies to be implemented:

  • All personnel acting on behalf of CMC must understand and implement this Environmental & Social Policy at all levels of the organisation.
  • This policy must be accessible to all interested parties and must be implemented throughout all facilities and operations of CMC.
